Ryobi 18V Chainsaws Vs. 40V Chainsaws: What's The Difference?

This is our comparison between the Ryobi 18V and 40V Chainsaws.

Ryobi electric chainsaws have been a top-selling model and are very popular. Ryobi’s 40V chainsaw, which is professional-grade and top-of-the-line, is a great addition for any tool collection.

Ryobi 18V chainsaws are more practical, if you’re looking for a simple chainsaw that can handle small jobs around your home. This side-by-side comparison will help you choose the right chainsaw for your needs.

Comparison Chart

Below is a chart that shows which tool is the best. The majority of tools can be used for multiple tasks so the chart is not intended to represent a specific tool. You can choose from either a general or specialized chainsaw to do most jobs.

Ryobi 40V Chainsaw

Ryobi just released a new 40V battery-powered chainsaw. This review has been in the making for approximately two months. I hope you now have an idea of what to expect with the Ryobi 40V chainsaw.

Positec, a Chinese manufacturer who also produces tools under the Worx brand, manufactures the Ryobi. These tools are significantly cheaper than their gas-powered counterparts which has made them more popular among both professional landscapers and consumers.

It may be recognized by some users as similar to the Stihls MS362 Magum. The marketability of this tool seems to be confirmed by Stihls recent 40V lithium-ion chainsaw.

Initial impressions are that the Ryobis 40V Chainsaw is a sturdy little saw. It also operates on an existing battery platform, which will be familiar to most cordless tool users.

Pros

Cons

Ryobi 18V Chainsaw

Ryobi’s 18V chainsaw makes a great choice for people who are looking for a light-duty saw but don’t want to spend a lot. The Ryobi saw is a bit bulky, and produces a lot vibration at higher speeds. This reduces comfort a bit.

The tool is identical to all Ryobi 18 Volt tools in that it can plug into any 18-volt socket (which means there are compatible batteries) and turn the blade on with the trigger.

Although the packaging states that this saw can cut through tree limbs upto 18 cm thick and 0.6m in length, I found it to be more difficult to cut through thicker branches.

Pros

Cons

  • There is no one place that can be used for oil extraction
  • No Chain Brake
  • Can only be purchased online

Both Models Can Be Used For Various Applications

People love that these products can be used in many different applications. They can be used at home as well as by professionals in landscaping.

Each model comes with its own features, so you’ll be able to enjoy both. You will find that there are many jobs that you can perform around your home so it is important to get an electric chainsaw with all the features you need.

Durability

Because they are made of high-quality materials, the Ryobi chainsaws can last a lifetime.

The latest technology is used in the manufacturing of the electric chainsaws. This ensures that they are not only convenient for their users, but also can last many years.

It is possible to buy an item and not worry about buying another one. This will allow you to save even more.

Fuel Consumption For Cutting

Both models use 1/2 L of fuel for 100 cuts. Both Ryobi 18V as well as 40v chainsaws are mine. My 4Ah P108 battery for my 40v SM420 chainsaw lasts approximately 60 cuts. Since the sawdust can be handled immediately after cutting, there’s no need to stop to empty the bag.

You can cut down trees as many times as you like, but it won’t last long. You should make sure that your chainsaw has an installed air filter to keep dirt out.

Battery

They can be interchanged! You can get a larger battery if you need to cut trees more efficiently.

Charger

This charger is compatible with all Ryobis 40V lithium battery batteries. It will also charge 18V and 40V batteries at full speeds (1 hour for 3Ah batteries, 50 for 4Ah batteries).

Tools

Except for the color, they are identical. You can see that I have an 18v chainsaw and a 40v battery so it is ready to use as a 40V tool.

Differences Between The Ryobi 18v And Ryobi 40v Chainsaws

Performance

Although the chainsaws are equally sharp when new, they will lose their cutting power over time. The 40V model is better if you have to cut through large trees.

Sawdust Produced

The chain produced sawdust that was fine and dry in both cases. They can sometimes get finer or wetter depending on how they are handled, but this one is very light.

Although the batteries are 18v, they are brushless so you get more power. These tools can’t be used with 20+ volt batteries. The battery voltage must match the charger’s output voltage.

Battery & Charger

The 40v battery voltage is not the same as the 40v charger output voltage. Although the batteries are 18v, they have more power because they are brushless. These tools can’t be used with 20+ volt batteries. The battery voltage must match the charger’s output voltage.

Ryobi’s 18 chainsaw (CS136), which cuts 339 cuts using a single 4.5 Ah (18V), P108 battery; requires 1.3 L fuel to cut 30 cuts through a small Douglas fir trunk. The Ryobi 40v, on the other hand, only needs one P108 Battery for 68 cuts. This is 21% less than their 18v chainsaw that uses the same battery.

Ryobi’s 40v chainsaw (SM420), cuts 415 cuts with a single 4ah battery charge. It uses 1/2 L fuel to cut through small Douglas Fir tree trunks. The Ryobi 18v requires only one 4Ah battery for 339 cuts, 38% more than their 18v model.

Bar Length

The maximum bar length for the 40V model is 36 cm. There is no difference except for the fact that one is lighter than another.

Warranty

1-Year Factory Warranty. What we love about these Tools: The new RYOBI 36-inch cordless chainsaw is a joy to use. It cuts through wood quickly and is lightweight, easy-to-use, and simple to use.

You don’t have to struggle with stale gasoline, or drag your 9kg saw around all day. You can think of it like this: If you enjoy cutting firewood, buy one saw for each job (lightweight and heavy) and keep them in your garage. It will be a wise decision.

Highlights

The Brushless motor is strong and durable, has a 3X longer life span per charge (compared with previous cordless chainsaws), and weighs less than 5kg. Ryobi One+ battery compatibility is available for future product expansion. For details about specific model differences, see the table.

Ratio

Ryobi 40V chainsaws are 2 to 1. Although they aren’t identical, they perform almost equally. They can cut trees up to 5 cm in diameter with minimal effort. These are the only uses for chainsaws; they’re not meant to be used every day.

Weight

Ryobis 40v model is 5 kg and Ryobis 38v model 52 kg. The difference in weight between them are 1 lb. They are lightweight enough to be carried around and controlled easily.

They are lightweight enough to be carried around and controlled easily.

Final Verdict

Both models can be used depending on your needs. If you only care about raw power, the Ryobi 40V may be too costly. However, the Ryobi 18v is perfect for home use.

If you plan on working with larger trees, or if you need to work for longer periods of time, the Ryobi 40V is a better choice. The 40V is also more comfortable than the 18v model.
